Kochi : The syndicate of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) has unanimously decided to revoke the suspension of 12 students if they tender an apology, said syndicate members on Monday. Four students who violated the suspension conditions by entering the university premises during the suspension period will, however, have to serve an additional two months of suspension.
The lights were damaged in the 2018 floods, but no complaints regarding them were received until March 2026, according to the university. A report submitted by theatre department head and syndicate member K K Krishnakumar confirmed that the lights were damaged in the floods, according to SSUS.
Syndicate members said CCTV footage from the university was examined as part of the inquiry into the protests. Sabu said the decision to appeal against the single-bench order of Kerala High Court was taken by the vice-chancellor and the syndicate was yet to discuss the matter. The university said the damaged lights weren’t the ones symbolically used by students as a bier representing the VC, Ciza Thomas. Krishnakumar clarified the matter at a syndicate meeting, the statement said.
Meanwhile, SSUS issued a statement clarifying the controversy over the damaged lights in its theatre department. Meanwhile, CPM-led Sanskrit University Janakeeya Samrakshana Samithi marched to the SSUS main campus at Kalady on Monday, demanding that the suspended SFI-affiliated students be allowed to appear for their examinations in accordance with a Kerala High Court directive.
