Kochi : Two autorickshaw drivers who took two women to a police station after they allegedly attempted to flee in an autorickshaw following a theft were honoured by the Ernakulam rural police on Sunday.
When the vehicle reached Railway Corner, he saw a 70-year-old woman approaching in tears.
The police said that the two Tamil Nadu-native women allegedly stole a passenger’s gold chain and boarded Thajudheen’s autorickshaw from the old bus stand in Aluva in the first week of Sept. He stopped the vehicle and asked her what had happened, and she said that her chain had been snatched. Thajudheen of Erumathala, Aluva, and Shahjahan of Keezhmad were honoured at an event held at the rural district police headquarters in Aluva. He got suspicious of their hurried behaviour. When the driver pointed to the women sitting in the autorickshaw and asked whether they were involved, the elderly woman identified them. The driver, along with Shahjahan and the victim, then took the suspects to the police station and handed them over to the police. Forty police officers, including deputy superintendents Baiju Paulose and C Binu Kumar, and circle inspectors P M Shameer and B K Arun, were also honoured for their outstanding investigations and service. District police chief K S Sudarshan inaugurated the function and presented certificates of appreciation. DCRB deputy superintendent of police K Abdul Salam presided. Perumbavoor ASP Hardik Meena and deputy superintendents Baiju Paulose, N Babukuttan, Y Nizamuddin and Binu Kumar, among others, spoke at the event. The programme was organised as part of Appreciation Day, an initiative of Kerala Police.
