Madurai corporation has floated around 15 tenders worth ₹60.90 lakh to repair and restore poorly maintained toilets at bus stands, markets, residential neighbourhoods and schools.
He added that while the 15 projects were welcome, several dozen toilets across the city still needed renovation.
They will see high traffic, and without daily cleaning and regular maintenance, they will go the way of other projects that have faced similar issues,” he said. A senior corporation official said work would begin in mid-November, with completion targeted for the first week of December. “The corporation will also conduct regular maintenance of these toilets and ensure that all facilities are working,” the official said, adding that daily and weekly schedules were being drawn up for sanitation workers.
Repairs are also planned at Thiruparankundram Corporation Primary School, the TPK bus stand and the government hospital area in Thiruparankundram. A damaged community toilet at the Valaithoppu entrance will be dismantled. P Balamurugan, president of Madurai Infra and Development Association, welcomed the projects but stressed the need for sustained maintenance. “Many of these projects are being undertaken near bus stands and hospitals.
