MMHRC performs stone and tumour removal surgery in one sitting
Madurai : Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai performed a kidney-sparing robotic surgery and removed a stone from the opposite kidney in a single sitting on a 51-year-old patient. Doctors used robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy to remove the 3.8×3.3cm cancerous tumour while preserving healthy tissue. Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS), a minimally invasive, incision-free procedure, was used to remove a 1.2cm stone from his left kidney.
Senior consultant urologist and andrologist Dr Paul Vincent, said the robotic approach enabled precise, minimally invasive tumour removal, with reduced blood loss and post-operative pain, faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay. The patient recovered well and was discharged four days later. Performing RIRS simultaneously avoided another procedure and hospitalisation.
