Plea to include disability related particulars in census questionnaire
Madurai: Madras high court on Tuesday ordered notice to the Centre and state on a plea seeking a direction to the authorities to take appropriate action to include disability related particulars in the population census – 2027 questionnaire in southern and central districts which come under the jurisdiction of Madurai bench. The petitioner stated that during the population census conducted in 2001 and 2011, disability related information was specifically collected from the households. However, in the ongoing census 2027, disability related particulars have not been included, thereby depriving persons with disabilities of proper statistical recognition. The omission of disability related questions from the population census 2027 is arbitrary and contrary to the constitutional principles of equality and social justice. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to the Centre and state to take appropriate action to include disability related particulars in the population census 2027 questionnaire.
