More than a year after a woman went missing in Tirunelveli, her husband was arrested on Friday for allegedly murdering her by pushing her into a quarry. Police on Friday recovered skeletal remains from the quarry and sent them for forensic examination.
The victim, Amaravathy, 34, was a resident of Konda Nagar in Tirunelveli, according to police. She got married to Maharaja of the same locality in 2008 and they have two sons. During investigation, police found that Maharaja married another woman in 2024. After one such incident in May 2025, Maharaja took Amaravathy on his two wheeler to a quarry in Pappankulam.
A police official said Amaravathy’s mother was residing in Cuddalore district and the two used to speak over phone. He either said she had gone out or gone for work. Recently, when she called, Maharaja said Amaravathy had eloped with a man.
However, in the past one year, whenever she called, it was Maharaja who answered the phone. There were frequent quarrels between the couple after Amaravathy came to know about it. There, he assaulted and pushed her into the quarry. Based on the information, police conducted searches and found skeletal remains in the quarry.
When the police conducted an inquiry with Maharaja, they learnt that he had murdered Amaravathy in May last year.
