Kochi : The motor vehicles department (MVD) detected 80 violations and collected around Rs 1.30 lakh in fines during a special inspection against racing, speeding and dangerous driving by private buses in Kochi and surrounding areas on Thursday.
Action was taken against the vehicles and drivers involved in the violations, officials said. The MVD said inspections would continue in the coming days, with checks to be intensified on major bus routes and in busy areas. “Complaints received from passengers and public regarding racing and speeding by private buses will be examined and further action will be taken,” said Ernakulam enforcement RTO Biju Isaac.
Violations detected included operating services in violation of permit conditions, driving without a valid licence, trip curtailment, driving in a manner endangering passengers, operating buses with doors left open, unauthorised modifications to vehicles, concealing registration number plates and the use of music systems. Officials also specifically checked for dangerous driving practices, including buses speeding past bus stops without halting and racing with other vehicles.
