Kochi: The transfer of Nilambur North divisional forest officer (DFO) P Dhanesh Kumar has triggered protests and questions, particularly as investigations into alleged forest land encroachment, illegal quarrying and mining, tree felling, wildlife offences and corruption complaints in the division are reportedly progressing.
Organisations involved in environmental and animal rights – including Voice for Integrity, Right and Indigenous Yard for Animals and Voice of Nilambur – have raised questions over Kumar’s transfer. They have called for the investigations and any resulting legal proceedings to continue irrespective of the change in the DFO.
A key concern is the special investigation into the alleged encroachment of 657.87 hectares of forest land in the Nilambur North division as Kumar’s transfer could affect the progress of the investigation, they said. They fear that Kumar’s transfer would result in lackadaisical approach on the part of the forest department in continuing with the investigation into alleged encroachment, disputed title deeds, reclamation of forest land, illegal quarrying, mining and complaints against former officials who backed the violations committed by vested interest parties.
