VILLUPURAM: A 40-year-old man was arrested on Friday on charges of murdering his six-year-old son by throwing him into a well after his wife denied him cash for consuming liquor in a village near Gingee in Villupuram district. The arrested was identified as K Selvaraj,40, a labourer from Nallan Pillai Pettral village in the district.
Police said Selvaraj and his wife S Devi, 35, have four daughters aged between 14 and eight years and a six-year-old son, who was studying in Class I at a govt school in the village. As the well was brimming with water due to recent rain, rescue personnel deployed pumps to drain it before recovering Sanjay’s body after a three hour-struggle. He threatened that he would kill the children if she refused him cash. The quarrel spilt over into Friday morning. The villagers alerted the Sathyamangalam police, and a team arrived with fire and rescue services personnel from Keelpennathur. The child’s body was sent to the Gingee govt hospital for postmortem. Police registered a case, arrested Selvaraj and are conducting a thorough interrogation.
Selvaraj picked up a quarrel with his wife on Thursday night after she denied him cash for consuming liquor. An enraged Selvaraj forcibly took his son around 9am on Friday and murdered him by throwing him into a farm well located behind the govt primary health centre.
