Kochi : The high court was informed by the central govt that a decision had been taken to conduct a multi-beam survey to assess the environmental impact of the sunken container vessel MSC Elsa 3, which capsized off the Kerala coast on May 25, 2025. A division bench of Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar was hearing public interest litigations filed by former MP T N Prathapan and others seeking adequate compensation for the fishing community and other stakeholders following the capsizing of MSC Elsa 3 off the Kerala coast.
Accordingly, the division bench posted the petitions to Sept 22. The wreck of MSC Elsa 3 was required to be removed by the vessel owners, particularly considering the hazardous cargo and other environmentally sensitive materials associated with the wreck. Previously, the ASG had informed the court that the wreck continued to contain hazardous cargo and other materials, including plastic nurdles and calcium carbide, which could adversely affect the marine environment if released. The court was told that two agencies have been identified for the task and that measures will be taken to complete it promptly. The additional solicitor general, who appeared for the central govt, submitted that the survey aims to evaluate long-term marine ecological concerns and potential future risks from the wreck and its cargo.
