CHENNAI: The cyber crime wing of the Tamil Nadu police has warned the public against a range of online scams involving fake lottery winnings, instant loans, scholarships and grocery offers.
Fraudsters send fake lottery messages and circulate social media posts promising huge winnings before demanding processing fees, taxes or other charges, according to police. People have been advised not to make payments or share personal or banking details in response to such messages. The cybercrime wing cautioned people against fake grocery offers that advertise unbelievable discounts to lure victims. People should verify such offers through the store’s official website or app, avoid clicking unknown links and never share OTPs or banking details. In another advisory, police warned people against fake loan apps that promise instant loans. Fraudsters use such apps to steal users’ personal data and subsequently harass them for repayments.
People who fall victim to cyber fraud or come across suspicious online activity can report it by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or through cybercrime.gov.in.
