We are also planning to extend the system upto Sivagiri and also the detection radius from 100 to 500m. Once movement is detected, alerts are relayed to field personnel so that teams can reach the spot and guide animals back towards forest reserves. Furthermore, the next phase of initiatives involves using drones to monitor areas that are inaccessible to personnel or where cameras cannot be installed due to network issues”, said Rajmohan.
Officials said the aim is to give field teams time to intervene before animals move towards human habitations. Tenkasi district forest officer Rajmohan said the cameras were positioned along routes commonly used by elephants to leave forest areas. Officials said the system is intended to reduce encounters with residents, crop damage and accidents.

Cameras have been installed at Panpozhi, Mekkarai, two locations in Vadakarai, Vellakkal Theri, Chinnakadu, Kadayanallur, Vairavan Kulam and Chokkampatti. The sites were selected based on frequent movement of elephants and other wild animals. Live feeds are monitored from control rooms at the district forest office and range office. “On the very first day it was installed, an elephant was spotted in Kadayanallur and driven back into the forest. Efforts are underway to issue alerts to farmers regarding wildlife movement. The department is now working on expanding the alert system to farmers living near vulnerable stretches. It also plans to use drones in locations where terrain or connectivity prevents installation of cameras.
