The agitation followed an incident in which two house surgeons injured in an accident on Monday and had to be referred to another hospital for investigations and treatment.
The MP asked how he could know whether the X-ray machine was working and questioned whether he could check if a doctor’s stethoscope was functioning, according to the protesters. He allegedly told the students not to “put on a show” and said he understood their intentions. Palakkad : The house surgeons at Palakkad govt medical college hospital, who have been protesting the poor infrastructure at the institute, have accused MP V K Sreekandan of making derogatory remarks against them. However, the interaction allegedly left the students dissatisfied. The house surgeons alleged that a heated exchange began when they questioned Sreekandan, who is also chairman of the MCH monitoring committee, about his alleged lack of awareness about the non-functional X-ray facility. The doctors alleged that Sreekandan asked a doctor recording the interaction to switch off the mobile phone and questioned whether those raising slogans would become doctors. The house surgeons are demanding functional X-ray and CT scan facilities, essential medicines and round-the-clock laboratory and pharmacy services.
On Thursday, Sreekandan visited the MCH to discuss their demands and persuade them to withdraw the agitation which had entered its third day.
