Kottayam : Motor vehicles department (MVD) has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a modified SUV that was used in flood rescue operations in Aranmula last month, following a directive from Kerala High Court against illegal vehicle modifications, officials said.
MVD found a total of 10 violations on the vehicle, including four tyres projecting outside the body and six illegally fitted lights, with a fine of Rs 5,000 imposed for each violation, the officials said. The action comes weeks after an earlier fine of Rs 5,000 imposed on the same vehicle by MVD officials in Adoor drew criticism. The person will have to pay the remaining Rs 45,000.

They said the vehicle owner must pay the fine and present the vehicle for inspection within seven days of receiving the notice, failing which the vehicle’s registration will be cancelled. The penalty was imposed on a jeep owned by Amal Vidwan of Kulanada in Pathanamthitta. Following the criticism, two MVD officials involved were suspended, a move that triggered strong resentment within the department, with officials staging a one-day statewide protest wearing black badges. The suspension was subsequently revoked amid the protests, and the officials concerned were transferred instead. The court intervention was after this. Download the TOI App.
