Madurai: Students of Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), K Pudur, received hands-on training in assembling and servicing lithium-ion batteries during a two-day programme aimed at preparing them for jobs and self-employment in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
The city is among six identified under the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023.
The training familiarised them with equipment and processes used in EV assembly and servicing workshops, according to a government press release. MID representative Mahendra Varman said, “Industry-led practical instruction could help bridge the gap between vocational education and emerging technical requirements.” Students handled cylindrical lithium-ion cells, testing instruments and assembly materials as instructors demonstrated battery assembly procedures. The programme also explored business opportunities arising from the shift to electric mobility, encouraging students to consider battery servicing, maintenance and related small enterprises alongside jobs in manufacturing units. The training comes as Madurai prepares to expand its EV infrastructure. A municipal EV Cell, constituted in February, is preparing a five-year plan to forecast EV adoption, identify charging station requirements and assess the impact on the electricity grid.
