Shallot prices cross Rs 100 per kg in Madurai retail markets

Madurai: With shallot (small onions) prices crossing Rs 100 a kg and big onion prices hovering around Rs 60 a kg at retail markets in Madurai, all eyes are on the Centre’s Kanda Express which is likely to bring buffer-stock onions from Nashik, Maharashtra , this week. The consignment will have only big onions, not shallots.

“During the last week of July, shallots were sold for Rs 40-60 per kg. The price has gradually increased and touched Rs 100 per kg now,” said N D Chellakannu, a trader at Mattuthavani central market. Because retailers were struggling to secure enough stock at wholesale markets, traders say rates could climb further.

Madurai is expected to receive at least 200 tonnes from the Centre’s buffer stock in Nashik, though the final allocation and arrival schedule are awaited, said a senior Southern Railway official. Union govt has identified Chennai, Madurai, Delhi, Ernakulam and Guwahati for Kanda Express shipments.
