VCK minister Vanni Arasu’s elder sister has been booked by Virudhunagar district police in connection with the death of a 38-year-old worker in an explosion at a licensed fireworks factory near Sattur on Saturday.

The unit manufactures small fireworks and fancy pyrotechnic items and employed more than 15 workers across five production rooms.

Police said the firecracker unit at Othaiyal village near Sattur, owned by Mariyappan and minister’s sister Jeyasakthi of Mallanginaru, was operating with a licence issued by the district revenue administration. Sattur Taluk police are investigating the incident and have booked a case against owners Mariyappan and Jeyasakthi, and Murali . Murali was remanded in judicial custody.

The victim, Madasamy, 38, of Meenampatti, was preparing a chemical mixture in the mixing room on Saturday when friction allegedly triggered an explosion, according to officials. The blast caused extensive damage and brought down the room. Workers in nearby sections evacuated the premises. Fire and rescue personnel from Sattur and Vembakottai rushed to the spot and began firefighting and rescue operations. Rescue efforts were briefly hampered as stockpiled explosive materials continued to burst intermittently. Firefighters later recovered Madasamy’s body from the debris. He had died on the spot.
