The chief minister’s Sept 28 launch of Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram scheme was shifted from Usilampatti to Govt Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, just five days before the event. Officials had spent three days inspecting Usilampatti Govt Hospital and making arrangements before security, space and traffic concerns prompted the last-minute change.
Police said Vijay’s road movement from Madurai International Airport to Usilampatti, about 50km away, would pass several villages where crowds were expected to gather. “Both Usilampatti GH and Madurai GRH were inspected simultaneously to assess feasibility of hosting the inaugural event,” a senior district official said. The official said safety concerns, particularly crowd regulation, eventually tilted the decision towards GRH, which has a larger campus and greater capacity to handle the programme.
Usilampatti had initially been considered for cultural reasons. Thaai maaman seer, where a maternal uncle presents gifts during important family occasions, has particular prominence in Usilampatti and the wider Madurai-Theni belt. The tradition closely matches the scheme’s branding, under which the state symbolically assumes the maternal uncle’s role by giving newborns a one-gram gold ring.
