80th ward in Jaihindpuram has achieved nearly 90% segregation and a 50% improvement in waste collection While source segregation struggles across Madurai.
Madurai : While Madurai’s waste segregation drive struggled with irregular collection and inadequate vehicles, ward 80 in Jaihindpuram increased daily segregation from 52% on September 1 up to 89% by month-end through dedicated vehicles, digital monitoring and incentives. Launched by deputy mayor T Nagarajan, the initiative covers around 3,500 households in zone 5. With monthly incentives encouraging participation, corporation officials plan to replicate the model citywide as ward 80 works towards 100% segregation.
Residents segregate wet, dry, sanitary and special-care waste into green, blue, red and black bins, respectively, provided through CSR funding. Five dedicated vehicles cover the ward’s five sub-zones daily. The corporation partnered with Sethu Institute of Technology’s technical division to install QR codes at every household, which sanitation workers scan during collection. An app awards households five points for segregating all four categories, two for separating two categories and none for mixed waste. The system also helps officials verify daily collections and monitor workers’ performance. Jaihindpuram resumed collection and cleaning quickly, aided by digital monitoring While the recent sanitation workers’ strike left garbage accumulating in FF Nagar and Aruldosspuram.
