Police said the accused mixed cocopeat treated with jaggery water and synthetic colours (Sunset Yellow and Tartrazine) with low-grade tea dust and granules to manufacture adulterated tea powder for illegal profit, which was supplied to local tea stalls. Mamidisetty Srinivasa Rao, posted at the Masab Tank section in Hyderabad, was trapped by ACB officials while accepting the bribe from a complainant, according to officials. Police warned of strict action against food adulteration and urged the public to buy tea powder only from authorised sellers. The amount was allegedly sought to avoid taking coercive action over a seized electricity meter.

The amount was recovered from the officer’s possession, following which he was arrested and produced before the Additional Special Judge for SPE & ACB cases at Nampally for judicial remand.
