Bijnor: Two men have been arrested in connection with a case in which a 37-year-old woman was allegedly cheated of gold earrings worth Rs 26,000 on the pretext of curing her illness, police said on Saturday. The investigation also uncovered a wider racket involving the purchase and resale of gold ornaments allegedly obtained through cheating and pickpocketing.
Bijnor SP Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said Kamlesh Ruhela, a resident of Achharjan locality, lodged a complaint on Oct 15. She alleged that on Oct 7, Aslam and two unidentified men, all in their 30s, approached her while she was returning after collecting medicines from a govt hospital. An FIR was initially registered under BNS Section 318(4) (cheating). Bishnoi said, “On Oct 16, we arrested Hiradesh and Pulkit, who told us during questioning that for around one-and-a-half years, Pulkit had been selling gold earrings obtained by Aslam, Junction and Kalia through cheating and pickpocketing to Hiradesh, his employer, in return for a commission. Hiradesh allegedly told investigators that he bought such jewellery and melted it down for resale, and had purchased gold worth around Rs 12 lakh to Rs 13 lakh over the past one-and-a-half years. Investigators said an earring allegedly taken from the woman on Oct 7 was sold to Hiradesh for Rs 26,000 and later recovered at his instance, while Rs 5,000 in cash was also seized from the accused. BNS Sections 317(2) (receiving stolen property), 317(5) (assisting in concealment or disposal of stolen property), 112 (petty organised crime), 3(5) (common intention) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) were later added to the case.
