Varanasi: A team of Azamgarh police arrested a man accused of raping a woman on the pretext of marriage, forcing her to have an abortion without consent and threatening to circulate obscene photos and videos. Police brought him to the district on Thursday.
Azamgarh SSP Anil Kumar said Tarkeshwar Yadav (51) was arrested after a woman lodged a case at Raunapar police station on July 4, alleging that he established physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage, forced her to have an abortion without consent and threatened to circulate obscene photos and videos when she forced him to marry her. After locating the accused in Sakinaka in Mumbai through technical surveillance, a team of police led by sub-inspectors Anurag Pandey and Sumit Singh, along with woman constable Narayani Tiwari, arrested him on Sept 21. After medical examination, Yadav was produced before Andheri East Court, which granted transit remand on Sept 22.
Yadav, a resident of Dungarpur under Kaptanganj police station, demanded that the woman transfer her agricultural land to his name before marriage, according to police. He repeatedly threatened to make private pictures and videos viral if she refused to transfer the title of the land to his name. Following detailed investigation and collection of evidence, the investigators obtained a non-bailable warrant from court.
He was brought to Azamgarh and sent to jail after being produced before a local court on Thursday.
