Kanpur: Special Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kanpur Nagar, Sudesh Kumari, on Friday ordered registration of a case against Ajay under HSNS Cess Act for evading cess worth Rs 20 crore.
The court also remanded Ajay to judicial custody and directed the authorities to produce him before the court on Nov 19. Investigating officer Rajul Nagar, superintendent, CGST and Central Excise Commissionerate, had arrested Ajay for allegedly evading cess worth Rs 20 crore, according to special prosecutor Ambarish Tandon. A cess on pan masala packaging through machines was imposed in Feb 2026.
The accused was allegedly operating a pan masala packaging unit using three packaging machines at Ravidaspuram, Gujaini, Mardanpur.
In Ajay’s case, the department calculated cess liability of around Rs 1 crore per month on the three machines allegedly operating at the premises. The department seized all three machines and took them into its custody. After hearing the prosecution and the defence, the presiding judge remanded the accused to judicial custody. The special prosecutor informed the court that the prosecution had filed a charge sheet against the accused and completed all legal formalities on Friday, including providing him with copies of the case documents.
