City's AQI breaches 300, likely to deteriorate further: The wider industry impact

Visibility reduces as smog envelops the surrounding areas before the Diwali festival at the IIT Kanpur highway, in Kanpur on Friday

Kanpur: The city’s air quality is likely to deteriorate further during the next 24 hours, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) expected to move from the severe category to the unhealthy category, according to pollution trends. The average US AQI is hovering between 250 and 280, while some real-time monitoring trackers and local stations have recorded levels exceeding 300. Falling temperatures and sluggish wind speeds are likely to aggravate pollution levels during the next 24 hours, according to weather expert SN Sunil Pandey. The situation is expected to be particularly critical between 6 pm and 8 am, when a thick layer of smog may settle close to the ground. However, bright sunshine and north-westerly winds, blowing at around 5-7 mph during the afternoon, may help disperse pollutants and bring partial relief. Meanwhile, the weather observatory recorded the maximum temperature at 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 15.6 degrees Celsius on Friday, indicating the onset of colder conditions. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 90%, while north-westerly winds blew at a speed of 2.4 kmph.
