NCR commissions Standard Kavach on Agra Cantt-Dholpur rail section
Agra: Indian Railways has commissioned its automatic train protection system Kavach on the 52.5 km Agra Cantt-Dholpur section, extending the safety technology along the high-density Delhi-Bhopal-Mumbai route. The system is key to plans to increase the maximum speed of trains on the Delhi-Agra semi-high-speed section from 130 kmph to 160 kmph. TOI had reported last year, based on an RTI reply from Indian Railways, that trains such as Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat, capable of running at 160 kmph, had been operating at a maximum of 130 kmph on the section for more than two years. Railway Board had earlier directed that the maximum speed be reduced from 160 kmph to 130 kmph until the automatic train protection system became operational. As part of the Agra-Dholpur project, 720 radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have been installed along the section to provide train location and operational information.
Agra division PRO Sanjay Gautam said, “Railways has been implementing Kavach across its network as part of efforts to strengthen train protection through indigenous safety technology.” With the latest addition, the rail route between Palwal in Haryana and Dholpur in Rajasthan is now covered by the protective system. Work to install Kavach on the Delhi-Palwal section is still in progress and Railways has not given a tentative date for its commissioning. Kavach is an indigenous safety system designed to assist loco pilots and regulate train speed in different operational situations, particularly in cases of human error. It provides protection against head-on and rear-end collisions, rollaway and risks when trains are stationary. The commissioning was carried out under the supervision of Agra division DRM Gagan Goyal.
The commissioning was finalised on Thursday, months after the system became operational on the Mathura-Agra Cantt section.
