The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Agra : Three people, including an elderly couple, allegedly died by suicide in two separate incidents in Agra within 24 hours, police said on Sunday. Preliminary inquiries indicate financial distress in one case while circumstances surrounding the other death were being investigated.

In the first incident, 65-year-old Sher Mohammed and his wife, Munni Devi, were found dead at their residence in Barr Wali Gali in Shahganj area in the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday. Police said they received an alert through the UP 112 emergency response around 10am on Sunday and found the bodies hanging in separate rooms. In the other incident, 30-year-old head constable Aarti allegedly was found hanging at her govt accommodation in the police lines. Aarti was a member of the 2018 batch and was from Biharikhera village in Unnao district, police said.

Police said Aarti had been on leave since the first week of last month and was due to resume duty on Wednesday. She was posted at an ACP’s office. Police entered the accommodation and found her unresponsive.

Neighbours alerted the police around 8am on Saturday after she failed to respond to repeated knocks on her door.

ACP (Lohamandi) Gaurav Singh said preliminary inquiries with family members and neighbours indicated that financial distress could have been a factor. DCP (City) Ravindra Kumar said the postmortem had been completed and the body was handed over to the family. Preliminary findings suggest suicide,” he said.

A forensic team inspected the scene and the bodies were sent for postmortem. Further investigation is underway. “No complaint has been received so far. The forensic team and local police are investigating the case.
