The Cyber Crime Police in Basti have apprehended two individuals linked to a gang accused of defrauding customer service center operators. The suspects allegedly presented fake UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment screenshots to collect cash while bypassing actual digital transactions. This scheme has raised concerns about the security and integrity of digital payment systems.
He said they cheated victims of ₹8,080 in Kashiram Pur and Etawah and around ₹1.01 lakh in Firozabad through similar frauds.
Additional superintendent of police Shyamkant said the duo had allegedly used the same modus operandi at multiple locations. The case came to light after a shopkeeper, Sunil Kumar registered a complaint on Sept 2, according to police. He alleged that the accused visited his shop near Hospital Crossing and showed him a screenshot purportedly generated through SBI’s YONO app, indicating a successful transfer of ₹9,090.
