Bijnor to revive 100 village ponds to improve water quality, protect crocodile habitats
District panchayat raj Officer Pritam Singh said each pond was being developed at a cost of around Rs 4-4.5 lakh. Bijnor has more than a dozen rivers, including the Ganga and its tributaries, along with over 200 canals and branches spanning around 1,500 km. The district also has more than 5,000 ponds, some of which have emerged as crocodile habitats.
Officials said restoring the ponds would improve aquatic habitats for crocodiles and fish while reducing pollution and supporting local biodiversity. “The programme will improve groundwater levels, village aesthetics, and biodiversity while promoting greater community participation in water conservation,” he said. Forest officials said crocodiles can enter village ponds through rivers and canals during the monsoon.
Plantation and fencing will also be undertaken around the ponds. The initiative also assumes significance as freshwater crocodiles frequently move into villages during the monsoon when rising water levels in rivers and wetlands force them towards nearby settlements.
