BSIP director Prof Mahesh G Thakkar told TOI: “Records preserved in fossils and geological archives can help scientists understand long-term changes in ecosystems, sea levels and monsoon patterns, as well as extreme natural events. Lucknow: What if fossils could help predict how ecosystems may respond to future climate change? A BRAHMA Mission Laboratory — Birbal Sahni Repository for AI-enabled Fossil Heritage, Modelling and Archives — was inaugurated at the institute on the occasion. The laboratory will combine AI, machine learning, advanced imaging and computing to digitise India’s fossil heritage and analyse large palaeoscientific datasets. The institute is also using AI and machine learning to build a future-ready palaeoscience research system.”

Scientists at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) are turning to artificial intelligence to extract new information from India’s fossil record as the Lucknow-based institute marked its 80th Foundation Day on Thursday.
