Gorakhpur : The district and metropolitan units of Congress staged a protest march in Gorakhpur on Monday against alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
He claimed the Election Commission had acknowledged shortcomings in the revision process and announced corrective measures on several issues, which he described as an admission of irregularities in the preparation of electoral rolls.
Party workers raised slogans alleging “vote theft” and “election theft” and burnt an effigy of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. District Congress president Rajesh Tiwari said party workers marched to raise objections over alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Earlier reporting noted: Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh, who participated in the demonstration, said that the party is agitating across the country over issues concerning the fairness of elections, voters’ rights, and the security of votes.
Former district Congress president Nirmala Paswan was also present. Responding to criticism from BJP leaders over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ’s allegations concerning the electoral process, Tiwari accused the ruling party of defending the Election Commission for political reasons. The protest march culminated at the district magistrate’s office, where Congress leaders reiterated their demand for a transparent and error-free revision of electoral rolls. Party workers also held a sit-in protest at Balson crossing to voice their opposition regarding Election Commission ’s functioning and issues concerning the voters’ list. Slogans were raised against BJP and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during the protest campaign. During the rally, workers took out an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and set it on fire. When the police reached the spot and tried to take away the effigy, a scuffle broke out between them and the Congress workers. The police failed to seize it and the workers burnt the effigy completely. He noted that party MP Rahul Gandhi has consistently raised concerns regarding alleged irregularities in the electoral process and the voters’ list.
