Head of the cardiology department at RMLIMS, doctors closed the vessel by guiding a small device to the heart through a blood vessel, without opening the child’s chest, according to Prof Bhuwan Chandra Tiwari. He said it was the first such procedure performed on a child below one year of age in the institute’s cardiology department. Prof Tiwari said several congenital heart defects, including PDA and holes between the chambers of the heart, can be treated through catheter-based procedures when diagnosed at the appropriate stage.
The child was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a condition in which a blood vessel that normally closes soon after birth remains open. The defect can cause excessive blood flow to the lungs and put additional strain on the heart. The child remained stable after the intervention and was discharged following a period of observation. He added that the department plans to expand treatment facilities for children with congenital heart defects at RMLIMS. The procedure was performed by Prof Tiwari along with Dr Ashish Jha, Dr Mithilesh Yadav and Dr Neeraj Awasthi. Doctors advised parents to seek medical attention if a child shows symptoms such as rapid breathing, excessive sweating or fatigue during feeding, poor weight gain, recurrent chest infections or bluish discolouration of the lips or skin.
