Kanpur: Police on Tuesday identified a body found buried in a forest in Auraiya district’s Bela police station area on Sept 20 as that of a 16-year-old girl, Shivani , a resident of Kannauj, and arrested two people, including her father, on murder charges.

On Sept 20, police received information about a body buried in a deserted forest between Dalppur and Bhadauriyan Purwa villages.

During questioning, the girl’s father identified the deceased as his daughter, police said. Police said her brother supports the family by running a vegetable business. CO Bidhuna Puneet Mishra said police would soon disclose further details of the murder.

Police reached the site and used a bulldozer to retrieve the body in an operation that lasted around three hours. After initial efforts to identify the body failed, police circulated information on social media and contacted people in several neighbouring districts. Investigators later examined CCTV footage and spotted two suspects. Police identified them and arrested them during raids.

Shivani’s mother had died earlier.
