Kanpur: A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Bahraich who died by suicide at a hostel in Hitkari Nagar under Rawatpur police station limits in Kanpur on Sunday night was allegedly being blackmailed with morphed nude photos, police said.
He said his son was academically bright and had topped the intermediate examination in 2024. To fulfil his dream of becoming a doctor, he came to Kanpur in 2025 to prepare for NEET. Police are investigating whether a cyber fraudster or someone from the hostel was involved. The caller reportedly accused him of watching obscene films, sent nude photos of him, demanded money and threatened to circulate the material on social media. During this period, the cyber fraudsters allegedly obtained the mobile number of the deceased’s father and sent his morphed photos and videos. Police personnel also counselled the student. Police tried to trace the caller’s mobile number, but it had been switched off. He had been staying in a hostel in Tulsi Nagar, Rawatpur, along with a classmate while preparing for the medical entrance examination. Suspecting a wider conspiracy to trap and extort money from his son, the man has sought an impartial investigation by Rawatpur police. Download the TOI App.
The student’s father said his son received a call from an unknown number on Friday. His father submitted a written complaint at Huzoorpur police station on Saturday. The man said he called his son several times on Sunday to counsel him, but the student remained distressed.
