Elderly woman dies after being severely assaulted by thief
Kanpur: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection with the death of an elderly woman whom he allegedly assaulted after entering her house with the intent to commit theft on Sept 15 in the Shanti Nagar locality of Chaubepur in Kanpur Nagar district. He then allegedly fled with a bag containing jewellery and Rs 12,000 in cash from a cupboard, police said.
Police said the accused, Balmiki, was arrested during intensive vehicle and foot patrols conducted in sensitive and mixed-population areas. Balmiki allegedly kicked and punched Kamla when she resisted, causing serious head and chest injuries and leaving her unconscious, according to police. Kamla’s daughter, Sarla, a private school teacher, learnt about the incident from neighbours and rushed to the house. An FIR was registered based on her complaint.
The victim, Kamla Devi (65), succumbed to her injuries earlier in the day in a city hospital.
