The protest also comes against the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court order concerning the sealing and subsequent demolition of more than 16,000 alleged illegal constructions, including colonies, in Meerut.
Additional regional transport officer Vikash Yadav said farmers had specifically sought protection for end-of-life tractors. Farmers said the action against old vehicles and unauthorised colonies directly affected residents and cultivators. The protest followed recent drives by transport and police teams, led by assistant regional transport officers, in which overage cars, scooters and motorcycles parked outside homes, shops and clinics were removed for scrapping. Farmers alleged the vehicles were seized without prior notice. They demanded accountability from officials and warned of intensified agitation if their concerns were not addressed.
