Meerut: For nearly 18 months, a family in UP’s Rampur district struggled to understand why Aadhaar biometric updates for 15-year-old twins Tuba Zubair and Khizra Zubair kept getting rejected.The repeated rejection of their Aadhaar biometric updates surfaced when the twins needed to update their details for Class 10 registration and was initially attributed to claims that they had identical fingerprints and iris patterns. “For the last 18 months, we had been running from pillar to post to update the girls’ Aadhaar cards. As a result, when Tuba’s own update was processed, the system detected that her fingerprints were already in the database and flagged her Aadhaar as a duplicate. Their fingerprints and iris details therefore had to be recorded during a later biometric update.

Deputy director general, UIDAI, Uttar Pradesh , Prashant Kumar Singh said Tuba’s biometrics had inadvertently been recorded against Khizra’s Aadhaar. Both girls were subsequently re-enrolled using their birth certificates and their Aadhaar numbers were successfully issued,” Singh told TOI. It had said that after one sister’s Aadhaar was issued, the other’s application was rejected as a duplicate, leaving the family worried about access to school admissions, govt schemes and other services. Senior ophthalmologist and former principal of LLRM Medical College Dr Sandeep Mithal told TOI, “The iris in the human eye is so unique that even the two eyes of the same person do not have identical ones. The girls’ uncle, Masood Ahmed, said the family had repeatedly approached Aadhaar update facilities before taking the matter to the Rampur district magistrate in July.
“The matter was technically examined and the erroneous record cancelled. The twins were first enrolled for Aadhaar when they were around four years and three months old, an age when biometrics are not captured. The UIDAI clarification came days after the Rampur district administration attributed the repeated rejection to the twins allegedly having identical fingerprints and iris patterns. The possibility of the twins having identical biometrics was questioned by doctors. No two persons can have identical structure of iris even if they are identical twins. The updation was getting rejected every time we approached the facility. It was then we approached the DM Rampur in July who found our problem genuine and handed over the issue to the Lucknow regional office of UIDAI. Now the matter is resolved,” Ahmed added. UIDAI on Monday clarified that their fingerprints and iris patterns were not identical and that the issue arose from an error during the biometric update process.
