Manoj Kumar , a resident of Barabanki who met with an accident, was admitted to RMLIMS on Aug 25 and was undergoing treatment in the emergency ICU under the supervision of Dr S S Nath.
Explaining the decision, Manoj’s brother Santosh Mishra and brother-in-law Laxman Tiwari said, “We felt if his organs could give someone else a chance to live, his life would continue to sustain others even after his death. The organ donation and kidney transplant marked the first cadaveric organ donation and cadaveric kidney transplant at RMLIMS. Despite continuous medical efforts, his condition did not improve. Following the prescribed medical protocol, the institute’s Brain Stem Death Certification Team declared Kumar brain-stem dead. The team comprised Dr P K Maurya and Dr Ritu Karoli. After the declaration, Kumar’s family was counselled about organ donation, the procedure involved and how it could help save lives. Grief counsellor Subhash Shukla and transplant coordinator Bernadict Minj spoke extensively with the family during the difficult period. Despite their immense loss, the family agreed to donate Kumar’s organs. We believe this act will give peace to his soul and also inspire other families to come forward for organ donation. The entire process was carried out under the guidance of RMLIMS director Dr C M Singh and CMS Dr Vikram Singh. The RMLIMS fraternity paid tribute to Kumar and expressed gratitude to his family for their courageous and selfless decision, which also enabled the institute to achieve its first cadaveric organ donation and kidney transplant.
