A 38-year-old woman took her own life at her home in the Sushant Golf City area of Lucknow on Wednesday evening. Her family has reported that her death was driven by significant emotional distress stemming from financial losses related to online gaming. They also mentioned that jewellery was allegedly pledged without their consent, adding to her turmoil.
Inspector Rajeev Ranjan Upadhyay said Vibha’s husband, Rajkumar Gupta , told investigators that she had developed an addiction to online gaming and had lost a substantial amount of money while playing.
After Rajkumar learned about the financial losses and the jewellery being pledged, he asked her to stop playing online games, they said. Vibha remained deeply distressed in the aftermath of the financial losses and related tensions, according to the family. Police said Rajkumar and Vibha were at home when the incident occurred.
Family members also informed police that Vibha had allegedly pledged some of her jewellery without informing them. Rajkumar, a retired Army personnel, is currently working as a head clerk at Bank of Baroda in Vibhuti Khand. Police recorded statements from family members and are collecting relevant information as part of the inquiry.
Family members said Rajkumar was previously married to Sunita Gupta, who died during treatment at Command Hospital in 2000. Rajkumar married Vibha in 2004, and the couple have a 17-year-old son, Atharva. He has two daughters from the first marriage, Khushboo and Nikki.
