BIJNOR: A 75-year-old retired professor of Vardhman College, Pramod Kumar Tyagi, allegedly died by suicide after jumping into the Ganga from Bijnor Ganga Barrage on Friday evening. 28.
Tyagi, son of Jaswant Tyagi and a resident of Geeta Nagri Colony in Bijnor city, had reached the barrage, according to police. Eyewitnesses said some policemen were having tea near the barrage bridge when they were informed that a person had jumped into the river from Gate No. Police said Tyagi was reportedly facing a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
His body was recovered by divers near a pillar of an under-construction bridge close to the barrage. Police immediately reached the spot and called divers to search for the missing man. During the search, divers found his body floating near a pillar of the under-construction bridge. The body was subsequently identified as that of Tyagi. Tyagi had retired as the head of the Zoology department at Vardhman College. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Both his daughters are married, while his son works outside the district.

City Circle Officer Abhay Kumar Pandey said the body had been sent for a post-mortem examination and that the circumstances surrounding the death were being investigated. However, the exact reason behind his death has not yet been established. Notably, Ganga Barrage has turned into a suicide spot.
