Cyber fraud
Kanpur: A 55-year-old man was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.31 crore by cyber fraudsters who lured him into joining an online trading group on Facebook by promising high returns. The victim, Devesh Dubey, a resident of Azad Nagar, invested the money in several instalments between Aug 10 and Sept 7, according to police. Dubey alleged that when he tried to withdraw the amount, the accused demanded Rs 34 lakh as commission, which he refused to pay. Cyber police station in-charge Abhay Singh said the money was transferred to 94 mule accounts across six states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
He said that he learnt of the fraud after lodging a complaint with SEBI.
Dubey then approached police commissioner Raghubir Lal, following which the cyber crime unit registered a case and launched an investigation.
