Kanpur: A woman allegedly strangled her one-and-a-half-year-old son at Sikri Vyas village in the Kotra police station area of Jalaun’s Orai early Tuesday, police said. She was taken into custody, while the child’s body was sent for postmortem examination.

Police said Paro (27) had been suffering from mental health issues for several months and was undergoing treatment. The couple, who married about nine years ago, had four children: Rishabh (7), Rashmi (6), Mohini (4) and Ritik (1.5). Police said Paro picked up Ritik from beside his grandmother around 4 am and took him with her. Around 5 am, Rajesh allegedly found Paro sitting near the unconscious child with both hands on his neck. Rajesh alerted Dial 112, following which the station in charge and other police personnel reached the scene and began an investigation.

Police said further legal action would be taken after receiving a written complaint from the family. Paro’s husband, Rajesh Barar, works as a labourer.
