Kanpur: A woman posing as a nurse was allegedly caught while trying to steal a newborn from the mother-and-child ward at the Community Health Centre in Ghatampur on Saturday night, police said.

The woman had been roaming around the hospital since the afternoon and was allegedly looking for an opportunity to abduct a newborn, according to police. Around 10pm, she entered the ward and told the child’s mother, Manju, that she was taking the baby for a check-up. ACP Krishnakant Yadav said the detained woman was being questioned and that further action would be taken based on the family’s complaint.
However, Manju sensed something suspicious and alerted her family members, who chased the woman. The accused was eventually caught by a security guard and the family members. Police reached the spot after receiving information and took the woman into custody. CCTV footage of the incident later surfaced, showing the woman running out of the ward carrying the baby.
