Kanpur: Bithoor police busted a gang involved in stealing equipment from mobile towers and arrested four of its members.
The company’s security officer, Vikas Singh Chandel, lodged a complaint at Bithoor police station, following which police launched an investigation. DCP West SM Qasim Abidi said one of the accused, Ankit Awasthi, is a former telecom company technician who used his technical knowledge to identify valuable components and remove them from mobile towers. During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that they entered tower premises at night when public movement was minimal and carried out the thefts. They said that they sold the stolen items and shared the proceeds among themselves. Police said the accused admitted to stealing equipment from mobile towers in areas falling under Sen Paschim Para, Govind Nagar, Chaubepur, Shivrajpur and Bithoor police stations.
The other accused were identified as Aditya Shukla, Vikas Bajpai alias Choochoo and Suraj Shukla. The investigation began after equipment went missing from towers belonging to Indus Towers in Naramau. Investigators are comparing the suspects’ statements with tower theft cases registered in these areas to establish their involvement. Download the TOI App.
