Kanpur: Chaos prevailed in the Gwaltoli area during a prayer meeting of the Christian community

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kanpur: Chaos prevailed in the Gwaltoli area during a prayer meeting of the Christian community after activists of a local Hindu organisation alleged that about 400 families were being converted there.

Personnel from four nearby police stations were deployed after Hindu organisation leader Krishna Tiwari, along with scores of activists, reached the venue and created a ruckus over the alleged conversions. He accused local police of delaying action and allowing organisers and others involved in the programme to leave through a rear exit.

Tiwari claimed he had received confirmed information about the conversion of around 400 families. He alleged that the police outpost in-charge kept the main gate closed when he arrived and made him wait outside for about 25 minutes while people were escorted out through the rear gate under police supervision. Gwaltoli police station in charge Ravi Kumar Singh said police were conducting a thorough investigation into the complaint and would take further legal action based on the findings. Tiwari alleged that a gang operating in Kanpur induced people to convert by offering financial assistance. He also claimed attendees were allowed to enter the programme without any verification of their identity or Aadhaar cards. He later submitted a written complaint at the police station.
