Kanpur: Families of the two grill workers, who died of electrocution at an apartment, ended their protest on Sunday after their demands for compensation and assurances of free education for their children were met.
Rawatpur police have sent the bodies for postmortem and initiated an investigation. DCP West SM Qasim Abidi, ACP Kalyanpur Dilip Kumar Singh and West Zone personnel were present at the protest site. The protest was called off after their demands were met.
The bodies were taken home under police security late on Saturday, but the families, instead of performing last rites, started a protest.
Their families staged a protest, placing the bodies outside the school belonging to the apartment owner in Kakadeo, and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family, jobs for the dependants and children’s education costs. A financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each has been given to the wives of both the labourers and Rs 50,000 cash to each family for the last rites. Besides, the children of one of the workers will receive free education at the same school up to Intermediate, while the other’s daughter will be admitted to an ICSE board school when eligible.
