Lucknow: Taking a cue from Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon stream redevelopment, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is planning to transform a 14.71-acre green belt in Aliganj Sector-O into a sports and recreation corridor with a private sports arena, parks, walking spaces and a redeveloped drain. The 8.40-acre northern stretch will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP), while the remaining 6.31 acres will be developed by the authority at a cost of around Rs 6 crore. The LDA-developed portion will have three themed spaces, including a 2.55-acre children’s park next to Aliganj Stadium. The green belt has four sections: 8.40 acres at the northern end, 2.38 acres and 1.38 acres in the middle, and 2.55 acres adjoining Aliganj Stadium. Total LDA expenditure is estimated at around Rs 6.5 crore, excluding private PPP investment.

LDA vice-chairperson Prathamesh Kumar said the ‘request for proposal’ for the PPP component was in its final stage and the tender would be issued within a few days. Officials said satellite imagery was used to map the green belt. The LDA has finalised the master plan. The PPP facility will have turf courts for football and box cricket, indoor badminton courts, a cricket practice pitch, a cafeteria, and kiosks. The private agency will maintain the facility. Facilities will include play stations, exercise equipment, seating, a gazebo, yoga space, walking and jogging paths, a reflexology path and two pickleball courts. It will also have a shallow stream, sand pit, undulating mounds, children’s cycling and skating areas, toilets, a snack counter, and a vending zone. A key feature will be the redevelopment of a drain running through the green belt. Walkways, greenery and seating will be developed along its banks, turning the neglected water channel into a public space, similar to the Cheonggyecheon redevelopment in Seoul. The project is expected to provide open space for residents of Aliganj and adjoining areas, with facilities for sports, walking and recreation. Download the TOI App.
