The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: A young man was found hanging from a jackfruit tree behind his girlfriend’s house near the border of Mohammadpur Khala and Fatehpur police station areas in Barabanki on Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said Mohit’s body was discovered hanging from a tree branch with a plastic rope. He allegedly sent the video to village head Ramakant Verma and to members of his family, and later uploaded it on social media, the police said. They began searching for him and found him dead the next morning, police said.

The deceased was identified as Mohit Verma, a resident of a village under Mohammadpur Khala police station limits who worked at a dental clinic and lived in a rented room in Fatehpur town. Before his death, he recorded a video in his rented room late Monday night in which he accused his girlfriend’s parents, brother and two maternal uncles of harassing him. After the video was seen late at night, the village head alerted Mohit’s family. Relatives tried repeatedly to reach him by phone but received no response. Teams from both Mohammadpur Khala and Fatehpur police stations reached the spot, but confusion over jurisdiction delayed the initial response. Fatehpur police later took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Mohit’s father, Vimlesh Verma, alleged that the woman’s family killed his son and then staged the hanging. He submitted a complaint at Fatehpur police station, seeking action against those named.

Reports of a financial settlement have also surfaced but have not been officially confirmed.

Police said the couple had been in a relationship for a long time and that a dispute between the families was settled at Fatehpur police station about a month ago.
