A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Kanpur for allegedly throwing his 19-year-old wife into the Ganga River from the Pariyar-Bithoor bridge in Unnao. The incident occurred on Friday evening following a dispute stemming from suspicions about her fidelity. As of Saturday morning, the woman remains missing, prompting police and divers to resume search efforts in the river.
Sujeet Rajput, a resident of Ghazipur village in the Bithoor police station area, had married Usha of Maraunda Manjhwara village in the Safipur police station area on Dec 14, 2024. The couple were returning by motorcycle around 7 pm when they allegedly quarrelled on the Pariyar-Bithoor bridge. Because darkness and the strong current made diving dangerous, however, police halted the operation.
Safipur Kotwali in-charge Sandeep Mishra said efforts to trace Usha in the river were continuing and police were gathering information by questioning her husband. Her father and villagers also blocked a road outside the Pariyar police outpost, demanding that she be traced quickly and effective action taken. Sujeet allegedly threw Usha into the fast-flowing Ganga before informing police. Officers questioned and detained him before arresting him.
Usha’s relatives reached the bridge and joined the search on Friday night. Police and divers resumed the search after daylight on Saturday.
