Maya reinstates Akash, signals end to BSP turmoil — Apology pays off

BSP national president Mayawati takes Akash Anand back into the party

Akash’s removal on Sept 10 followed an earlier decision to reduce his responsibilities. At an all-India party meeting on Sept 3, Mayawati had announced that Akash was being demoted from national convener to an ordinary party worker. Mayawati had sought Siddharth’s retirement from politics, saying so in an X post on Sept 9.

The immediate trigger for the rift was Ashok Siddharth, Akash’s father-in-law. Akash did not repost that message, which Mayawati viewed as a sign of allegiance to his father-in-law and a betrayal of the party leadership. He also backed Mayawati’s decision to expel Siddharth and seek his retirement, writing that the party’s mission was larger than family considerations.

In his apology posted on Friday, Akash said he had distanced himself from social media at the time and could not repost the message, but that his silence was misunderstood.

Lucknow: Three days after Akash Anand apologised to BSP chief Mayawati , she reinstated him in the party and restored his position as national convener, a post he held before being removed on Sept 10. On September 3, she had removed him from the crucial post of the party’s national convenor.

Announcing the decision in a post on X on Monday, Mayawati said Akash was being taken back in the “interest of the party and the movement” and in view of his apology. She said the move followed feedback from within the organisation, noting that “most people in the party” felt Akash’s request should be accepted and that he should be allowed to resume work with his earlier responsibilities. On Monday, Mayawati said that with Siddharth now retired, she hoped party functioning would proceed “smoothly and properly” and frequent organisational changes would not be required, while adding that this would “depend considerably” on Akash. In his apology, Akash pledged to serve under Mayawati’s “sole leadership,” saying trust would be rebuilt through work. He also said he would not join any other political party. Earlier reporting noted: “After considerable thought, the party has decided, in the interest of the party and the movement, to once again appoint Akash Anand as the BSP’s national convenor and give him an opportunity to work in the party again,” Mayawati said in a post on X. Earlier reporting noted: She had announced Anand’s ouster on September 10, setting him “completely free” from the BSP.
