Varanasi: Police arrested two Bangladeshi nationals for theft near Faridpur underpass in the Sarnath police station area late Monday night.
Police recovered a pair of silver anklets and a chain, Rs 4,000 cash, passports, two mobile phones, iron crowbars and screwdrivers used to break locks. The accused entered India from Bangladesh and reached Kolkata on Sept 25 before travelling to Varanasi, according to police. They confessed to breaking into a house in Amanpuri Colony on Oct 19 and stealing valuables.
SHO Pankaj Tripathi said the accused had entered India around three months ago and had visited earlier too. During questioning, they said they had initially come to India for travel and later for medical treatment, but police suspect they were trying to mislead investigators. Police said Shafiqul Islam’s belongings were stolen after his arrival in Varanasi, leaving him without money. Police said some of the stolen jewellery had already been sold. DCP Varuna Zone Rajesh Pandey said police and other agencies are questioning the accused, gathering further information and carrying out legal proceedings.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Bairul Islam and Mohammad Shafiqul Islam alias Munna, both residents of Chapai Nawabganj in Bangladesh. The two then reached Faridpur in Sarnath and began committing thefts. Following their arrest, security agencies, including the ATS, questioned the accused. Their passports and travel records are being verified, and police are investigating whether others were involved.
They were produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to jail.
